Why do so many women love Don Draper? There’s the fact that he’s dashing, handsome and charismatic but those characteristics are things that any woman would be attracted to. But it’s more than that because Don Draper is sort of a bad guy.
Regardless of his constant cheating, cavorting and womanizing, Don manages to manipulate his way into our hearts and it’s not because he is so handsome. It’s because we can rationalize all the terrible stuff he’s doing and blame it on the time period and on the fact that Don is a man’s man.
In fact, I am not sure that Don would be so openly worshipped if there were really any manly men left. Not to say that America is devoid of masculinity as a whole but walk outside and be confronted with the fact that many of the so-called men are about as masculine as women. What gives?
Some people might go so far as to blame trends like manscaping but I am pretty sure Don Draper and all the men at Sterling Cooper Draper Price managed not only to be “manscaped” but they did it without sacrificing who they were as men.
And to be perfectly honest, I think women are to blame. Now before you get your panties in a bunch and decide to lynch me. Hear me out. My mother is a feminist and she worked really hard to raise strong, brazen and bold daughters. However, with my brothers, not so much.
In fact, it’s as if my mother expected them to raise themselves or maybe she didn’t want them to be as strong as her daughters. Maybe lots of mothers wanted their daughters to really trump their sons but to be perfectly honest, I can’t say for sure.
What I can say is that I hate you all, all of you who had the opportunity to be with a man’s man and then raised a pussy. I don’t want to be with a guy that is softer, delicate and more feminine than I am.
I want to be with a man that I can call my equal. A man who was raised to stand up and fight for what he believes in. And a man that thinks wearing jeans tighter than his girlfriend is silly.
More importantly, I want to raise sons that will respect, love and cherish their female counterparts; men that will be open-minded without sacrificing their manhood. And most of all, I want to be responsible for raising children of either gender that are strong willed, tough and creative.
And for the good of humanity, I hope you want this as well.

Amen.
