Guy Files: Cell Phone Rants

So in a T-Mobile update, finally, after all the ranting and raving I’ve done online, T-Mobile finally responded. They said they were sorry, that my problems were related to network issues on their end and that I needed to give them three phone numbers that had problems calling me with in 72 hours of the incident. So, now I just have to wait for the service to screw up and for someone to tell me about it. Joy!Chris L. the agent in question apologized profusely and didn’t know why anyone hadn’t thought to open a trouble ticket (which is what they will do with all that detailed info, once I can provide it), and told me it was easily fixable. We shall see. Nothing was mentioned about my refund, and one way or another I will get a refund. I have been paying reliably the typical smart phone rate since day one and I’ve had problems since day one. I would certainly stay away from T-Mobile and both HTC and Android phones (I’m on my third HTC Android phone in just under a year and a half), but I’m not sure what options there are out there.

Seems like everyone knows someone that swears by a certain provider and that same person knows at least one person with that same cell phone provider who hates them with a passion due to crappy service. I’m really not sure why that is, but the bigger issue is: why do we keep putting up with it?

Yes, I know. We all need cell phones. But do we really need to pay $100 or more for a smart phone, often one that doesn’t work or work reliably? I have a friend on Verizon who can only use their cell phone if they stand in a specific corner in their apartment. I have another friend on Sprint who can’t get any service on their cell phone in their apartment. Unless they use wifi calling. Imagine that, you pay to have a phone that is your lifeline, but it doesn’t work in your house?

The craziest thing is that these cell phone companies aren’t technically required to provide you with cell phone service, even though these contracts require you to pay faithfully, no matter what. What’s even crazier is that there’s no penalty for them. The service sucks, the phone is useless so you are forced to go with another provider and guess what? You have to buy your way out fhe contract?

Where can I get this gig? Only cell phone providers and elected officials and maybe CEOs get rewarded for epic stupidity. They overcharge us ($100+ a month seems to be an arbitarily decided number. Apparently, that’s what the marketing department has figured out we are willing to pay) for the service and we pay out the wazoo and then when we get to a point where we have so many service problems we have to switch, then we have to pay them again! Shouldn’t they pay us for screwing up?
