Design, Meet Business

Lauren Conrad’s new line, Paper Crown, proves that she has the chops to balance all the aspects of producing a fashion line.

“Paper Crown is a collection for those who like to play dress up in a grown up world.” Upon viewing the inaugural looks of mogul Lauren Conrad’s latest clothing line, shoppers can see that this statement, which appears on the website’s “About” page, sums it up flawlessly. Conrad once again proves her worth in the fashion world with a versatile line that straddles the line between flirty fun and sophistication beautifully.

A true testament to Conrad’s accessible style, Paper Crown, whose Fall line hit stores like Nordstrom and Planet Blue on August 1st, consists of pieces that translate easily from office to party; Sunday Brunch to Date Night. Perhaps the greatest success of the line is that it manages to strike that often-elusive goal of versatility; the pieces allow their wearer to adapt them to her own sartorial point of view yet are chic enough to stand on their own. Essentially, Paper Crown is the wardrobe of the everyday young woman… the stylish, confident, sophisticate who takes the boardroom by storm before meeting her friends for a cocktail and a night of dancing.

The Paper Crown wearer is fashionably ready for any occasion.

All of this is putting Conrad on par with her much more seasoned contemporaries. One style of note is Conrad’s “Ella” dress, whose tiered, floral design is reminiscent of such high runway bigwigs as Derek Lam and the latest, prairie-romantic collections of Ralph Lauren. However, budget-savvy fashionistas in search of this kind of runway-level sophistication need not worry about breaking the bank; Paper Crown is priced from $69 to $400.

Furthermore, Conrad evades the conundrum of sacrificing quality for affordability, right down to the fabric. Proudly touting Paper Crown as her first holistic effort, working from the business and financial side in addition to design, she marks this as one of the challenges that she took on with determination. “In the past, I wasn’t the one financing the line, so the decision to use higher quality trim would not have been mine… I find [this] disconcerting,” she blogged on Forbes.com just 3 days before Paper Crown’s official launch. “By investing in quality and design, Paper Crown lends credibility to my name as a designer. [It] is actually more of a passion project- an opportunity to make beautiful clothing on my own financial and creative terms.” No doubt she accomplishes this well, and we remain quite confident that the sales will speak for themselves. After all, as Paper Crown’s “About” concludes: “Girls just want to have fun… and look lively while doing it.”
