It always comes, and each year it seems the influenza strains are stronger and stronger. Same with colds. The questions always seems to be, “Will this run its course or should I see a doctor?” The Mayo Clinic now has an online evaluation to help you with that question.
It looks at such issues as symptoms and whether or not you are at high risk and offers simple advice. If you are unsure, always call your doctor to ask for their advice as often times the flu can lead to or occur with bacterial infections that might need antibiotics. And if you want information about H1N1 flu and flu vaccinations, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has a website with pertinent information about the flu and vaccinations at flu.gov. There you can learn that the influenza virus changes year to year and that’s why some recommend getting the updated vaccination each year. They also discuss over the counter medications available at your local pharmacy.Â
Use preventative measures this time of year. Wash your hands often. Don’t share utensils or drinks, get plenty of fluids and rest at the first signs of the flu or a cold. And remember that there are many different strains of influenza. You can have one strain, and then get reinfected with a new strain so by all means, avoid those if you can who are sick.
