You probably use Facebook, but do you know the story behind it? The movie is more creation myth than docudrama, but it makes for an entertaining ride. The Social Network is a searing take on founder Mark Zuckerberg’s descent into isolation as he endeavors to connect the rest of the world through his online empire.
Don’t let the trailer fool you, this is not an action flick. It’s a drama about a lonely assassin. Watching it, I felt as if I’d entered the bleak and isolated world of an Edward Hopper painting. Based on a novel by Martin Booth, The American has sparse dialogue, photographic-like cinematography, and a dark vibe that becomes even more pitch as it progresses.
I interviewed the writer of The Wish List, Gary Goldstein, to get an inside perspective on his new movie. It was inspired by a real-life situation in which a woman made an exhaustive list of rules for her current husband. Gary then creatively transformed this concept into the tale of Sarah Fischer (Jennifer Esposito), a very persnickety woman who is sick of dating the wrong men.

Boy meets girl, boy gets girl, boy loses girl – but not in that order. This movie is a nonchronological mosaic of moments as Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) pursues his commitment-phobic dream girl, Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel). The time-jumping is more charming than confusing, and the dialogue is peppered with quirky wit.
